Asthma is a respiratory disease that causes the airways to narrow, and is often the result of exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. These stressors are often called triggers. This constriction causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or coughing, and can be alleviated by medicines called bronchodilators.
If you have asthma, a Peoples Pharmacist can help you:
- Learn about asthma and how to effectively manage it.
- Identify, avoid and control asthma triggers.
- Monitor your asthma with a peak flow meter.
- Use inhalers correctly and effectively.
- Feel confident about asthma treatments.
Bronchodilators provide short-term relief of asthma symptoms. Long acting corticosteroids decrease the inflammation in your lungs which helps prevent asthma attacks. Corticosteroid inhalers decrease the need for short term relief (bronchodilators). Depending on the type of asthma and number of attacks you experience, you may use both types of inhalers with or without oral medications.
Asthma must be monitored and controlled over a lifetime. With the advice and encouragement of a Peoples Pharmacist to boost your confidence, you will understand more about the disease, and will be able to effectively control your asthma.
